The Olinda Fire Brigade services the postcodes of the Olinda township and most parts of Mount Dandenong. This area extends along the main ridge of the Dandenong Ranges between the townships of Kalorama and Sassafras. Altitude at its peak is 610 metres and extends approximately down to 510 metres. This area is considered of extreme bushfire risk and is described as urban forest interface.

Consisting of moderate density housing with highly modified European style gardens in a bushland setting the area is surrounded by parcels of State and  National Parks, agency and privately managed land.

There are approximately 1300 rateable properties with a population of approximately 3000 people comprising mostly of young to middle aged family units and significant number of elderly persons. Significant population growth is not expected as most of the available subdivided land is already built upon. The majority of the population commute off the mountain to their employment. Land holdings range in size from quarter of an acre to five acres. Dwellings are mostly older style weatherboard or brick veneer. There is a notable turnover in the residential properties.
